Elisa knew this was the best way to bring up the subject. Thorin shifted uncomfortably. "What do you mean, Lady Elisa?" Elisa struggled to control her rash temper. How could they not understand what she meant? "I'm talking of the simple matter of spies, Prince Thorin. Surely that concerns you?" Thorin narrowed his eyes. "It concerns me, Lady Elisa, it concerns us all. Why don't you explain?" She took in a deep breath and nodded to him. Her gaze shifted to Entinonyar, who only wore a grim expression. "I truely do not mean to frighten or set you off, Lord Entinonyar, but there is a spy in your holdings," Elisa said bluntly. Entinonyar's expression did not pale to a deathly white as Elisa expected, but flashed with concern. He frowned. "What do you mean?" "Conde Tristán is a traitor," she said. Elisa almost recoiled with surprise from his reaction. He laughed. "Conde Tristán a traitor? I wouldn't dream of it! I've known him for half my life. Never done anything against me," he chuckled. Panic swelled in Elisa's chest. Had Gavin been telling her lies? If so, why risk the journey to tell her so? To set her off guard? Luckily she had a backup. "Then how do you explain the growing amount of attacks on your city, so heavily guarded and hidden that no one would find it without details? How could they have found your city without knowing something? And that information had to come from someone. Maybe someone of lower class but most likely a higher man. A man close to the target." Almost every lord had an expression of surprised, maybe even disgust on their face. Even Lady Kisawen showed a hint of fear, though her expression was masked with deep thought. "I-I don't know, Lady Elisa. Surely there was a reason behind it," Entinonyar stammered. His face was pale now. "There's more to it, Lord Entinonyar," she replied. "Tristán isn't the conde's real name. He's completely Invierno. His name is actually The Wind Blows Strong For The Raging Storm." All the lords except Lady Kisawen gave her a look of confusion. Kisawen spoke for her. "Invierno's have their own sacred language. The Lengua Classica. When their names are translated into the common toungue the appear quite long. They believe the Lengua Classica to be the language of God." Elisa clenched her jaw. Everyone believed they knew the language, the path or the will of God. How could they know when she bore His stone? Kisawen continued, gazing at her thoughtfully. "I only know this because the Lengua Classica is closely related the the Elven language we use in Wyndlyn. The Inviernos came from Wyndlyn you know. They were banished to Invierne thousands of years ago and learned magic." Elisa nodded. She was glad Lady Kisawen was there. The proved to be a comforting presence though she was mysterious. "Speaking of magic, Lady Kisawen, your knowledge and abilities in magic would help us greatly with Invierne," Estella said. Kisawen smiled sadly. "You think I can help you but I cannot. I only practice Light magic. And in that catagory the arts of the Elements. They practice Dark Magic." There was a communal sigh between the Lords in the courtroom. "I can help you, however, know what to expect. But I cannot help you defeat their magic."

"But I thought Light Magic was the only thing that could stop Dark Magic?" Entinonyar said, raising his eyebrows confusedly. "I understand that all the elven cities in Wyndlyn, including your city of Dornar (sorry I don't have accents on my computer), practice Light Magic and hardly communicate with the Invierne, but - No, I'm not accusing you of anything, My Lady - but shouldn't - wouldn't - you be able to defend and possibly defeat the Dark Magic inside the Animagus and the Decegerus..." "That's beside the point," snapped Lady Kisawen. She seemed slightly hurt by the fact that Lord Entinonyar may be accusing her of not completely doing her job - her pride for the elves was largely affected by what others thought of the elves themselves, who were graceful, threatening, excellent archers and swordsmen, and familiar in many kinds of magic from easy housework magic to powerful defensive and offensive spells. "We have to focus on the Light Magic needed to defeat the Invierne." "And how do you suppose we do that?" Prince Thorin asked. "Most of us have to return for business with our cities soon - and we have too far a journey to meet somewhere to practice regularly." "The purpose of the meeting," interjected Lord Zito, "is to discuss problems and how to solve them. Not to practice magic." "However true this may be - and I assure you, Lord Zito, that this is quite true and that you are quite right - the Light Magic seems to be the only way we can solve the problem," Lord Geryson said, speaking for the first time. Lord Zito made a hardly audible grunt. "Fine, yes, carry on, then, Lady Kisawen." Lady Kisawen smiled gratefully. "Now. We are from cities within states, but we all live in the same country - Jurcillya. Me, from Dornar of Wyndlyn. Lord Geryson, from Furtir of Gibbin. Lady Estella, from Virculent of Sitzaer. Lord Entinonyar, from Coulyar of Djornis. Prince Thorin, from Yirzicer of Durin. Lady Elisa, from Amalur of Hexecter. And, of course, our kind host, Lord Zito, from Puerto Mar of Fargus. We represent the seven states of Jurcillya. Within our state, we have been chosen by all the cities to represent the state - either by blood-" she nodded to Prince Thorin, Lady Estella and Lady Elisa herself "- or by election." She nodded to the other Lords. "Either way, we represent our cities and states and have come together and therefore must defeat the Invierno. We have concluded that the only way to do this is by using Light Magic, correct?" The Lords and Ladies nodded respectfully, even Lord Zito. "The first thing to do is clear your mind of hate, anger, and fear. Using Light Magic spells for evil purposes make them useless. If you have conflicting emotions, then the spell becomes weak and can easily be parried or stopped with a Dark spell. Practice this before you start, and right now, please practice the "illumino" spell. Very useful to see incoming dangers. I'll turn the lights off - tenebrescero - and try it." A small pause of calm breathing followed this speech and then each member of the meeting whispered, "Illumino." Elisa was surprised to see a light pulsating from her hand when she tried. She was so surprised and afraid of what it might do that it flickered out. She chastised herself mentally - Light Magic did not work if the user was afraid. She tried again, clearing her mind. Suppressing her frustration was harder that she thought, but after a few more tries, she was holding another orb of silvery light. Unsurprised, Lady Kisawen noted that none of the other Lords or Ladies had managed besides Prince Thorin. "Well done," she said with a smile. "Practice tonight, all of you. Tomorrow we'll try a protection spell. I know that the meeting is over today, but we must practice the spells together. Same time, same place." She nodded to the Lords after a quick glance towards Lord Zito, who was holding a flickering orb of light. He seemed to have the same problem as Elisa had had, as an alarmed expression showed on his face and then the light flickered out. He nodded to Lady Kisawen's decision and everyone left the room. Elisa returned to her chambers to report the meeting's happenings to Gavin. She easily picked up the dagger from him with a quick summoning charm - "Apporto" - that she had practiced back in Amalur. She wondered what he would have to say about this meeting.

As she arrived to her chambers she found Gavin leaning across the doorpost to her bedroom. "So, how was it?" he asked with a grin as Elisa pushed him aside from the door. "It was good. I mentioned your points. And we've found some solutions. But it lead to quite a magic lesson from Lady Kisawen," she said smiling. She reached under her blouse and fingered the godstone that lay there. She hadn't told anyone but it had almost pulsated as she did the spell. Gavin chuckled as he followed her into the bedroom. "Well that was unexpected. You'll have to practice with me later, but first tell me exactly what happened." Elisa rolled her eyes. "Haven't I done that already?" "In detail," Gavin said crossing his arms. Elisa sighed and told him what had happened. "Light Magic, eh? No one's practiced magic in Jurcillya in years, save a few ancient healers and the sorcerers," he said pacing. "I know, but its the only way we can oppose the Invierno's Dark Magic. But our country is more skilled in handling weapons. They depend on their magic more than their sword. Speaking of which..." Elisa summoned Gavin's dagger from her boot with a quick "Apporto", where she'd hidden it for the meeting since she'd taken it. He frowned and snatched it from her. "Don't get all fancy with the magic, Elisa. That's my dagger. A prized assasin's dagger to be specific. Don't make me use it." "Oh, I don't think you will, Gavin," she drawled. He growled and sheathed it in his belt. It suddenly surprised her why it had been only her sparing Thorin and Zito who had been able to successfully complete the Ilumino spell. Was it blood or was it something else? "I'm tempted to go to the library and search for some magic books. I'm sure Lord Zito has a book or two. Plus, you're no expert in magic. So I need some true guidance for these spells. I want to advance as much as possible before the next meeting," she said fingering her palm. It had glowed when she did the spell. She knew it was just part of the spell but it stranged her somehow. "Alright. I'll help you as much as I can, even if I'm "no expert in magic," he said raising a brow. Elisa shrugged as he offered up his arm as they headed off to the library.

The doors opened automatically as Gavin and Elisa entered the library. The library was in a turret of the castle, allowing lots of sunlight in through th big windows. There were no shelves along the walls - only cushioned benches. The shelves were organized by genre, alphabetically, and by relevance. Elisa skipped straight to the nonfiction section about magic while Gavin lingered apprehensively far away from the librarian's desk near the books about - conveniently - weapons. Lady Elisa skimmed the titles, pulling certain books out from the shelf. Light VS Dark Magic, a Guide to Light Magic, Easy Light Magic, Protection Spells and Their Uses, How to Create Light Magic, and other titles soon became a pile that Elisa carried to the librarian's desk. The older woman looked at Lady Elisa with a slightly puzzled expression as she checked the books out, but seeing as she was a guest for the Quorum meeting, didn't question anything. Lady Elisa smiled at the librarian and nodded to the security guard by the door as she waited for Gavin. "Gavin?" she asked. "Coming!" he squealed. They exited the library together and reentered Elisa's room. "You certainly have a lot of books," Gavin remarked as he closed and locked the door. "I thought they might be useful," replied Elisa. She began flipping through the pages, determined to do as much research as she could while practicing her magic. (So much for short story - oh well, it's coming along nicely)

After flipping briefly through all the pages, Elisa went back to the beginning to overlook things in more detail. What she found was fasinating. "Interesting," she murmurred. Gavin looked up from what he was doing. Not surprising, he was sharpening his knife. "What? What'd you find?" "It says here that a spell doesn't have to be spoken in order to work properly. It can be said mentally and still have the same effect," she said reading over it once again. "That'll certainly come in handy if you're obligated to silence," he said thoughtfully. Elisa nodded and flipped to the next page. There in front of her was an overwhelming list of spells. There were spells of love, spells of healing, spells of weather, spirtual spells. Elisa shook her head. She'd have to sort out the most useful ones and practice them one by one. Two spells caught her eye. Dreamwalking and Invisibility. Elisa looked in detail at how to conjure them both. To conjure the dreamwalking spell, the book said, you must clear your mind of all your current thoughts. Picture yourself in detail how you look, what you are wearing. Once you've figured out those details, picture the image of the person you'd like to speak to. Then simply murmur or mentally say, Pertraca, and imagine a trail that connects the two of you, to appear in the dream of the person you wish to speak to. It takes extreme concentration in order to remember the details of the dream. If the dream is important, you must force yourself into a deep state of concentration and sleep in order to remember. Elisa was mind blown that this was possible. If she could conjure this spell, it would help her in so many ways. She then looked to the spell of invisibility. To conjure the spell of invisibility, you must close your eyes, and imagine a cloud of mist surrouding you. Let that mist take the appearance your surroundings. Then let yourself become one with the mist. Mumurr or mentally say, Horum, and you shall become invisible in your surroudings. Once you open your eyes, the spell will only continue to work if you stay deeply concentrated on your changing surroundings. Elisa looked up from the book to Gavin, who still sharpened his knife in the corner of the room. She was quite curious the try the dreamwalking spell. And the invisibility spell. "Gavin?" "Hmm?" he said looking up from his work. "Are you by any chance, feeling tired?" She asked. "Quite. I didn't sleep well last night. Plus I'm pretty bored right now." "Well then," Elisa said with a smile, "I'd like to try something with you." "One of your spells?" He groaned. "Fine, just tell me what I have to do." Elisa explained to him that she was going to try the dreamwalking spell, even though it was an advanced and spiritually difficult spell to conjure. She told him to naturally fall asleep and she would try to speak to him. "Please try not to think about the fact that I'll be coming to you in your sleep. It'll just keep you awake. I have to wait until you are completely asleep until I begin." "How would you know if I was completely asleep?" He asked. "I bet you would start snoring or something of that nature. But just relax for now. I'll see you in the dreamworld," Elisa said smiling.

(wow, cool idea!) It only took Gavin a few moments to fall asleep. For a little while, Elisa was wondering how many sides Gavin could have - a friendly assassin? Then she quickly concentrated, breathing deeply, conjuring images in her mind of what exactly she looked like. Once satisfied, she began picturing Gavin - asleep and snoring. In her mind, a thing silver wire of mist connected her own mind and Gavin's mind. SSShe struggled slightly to keep all these images in her head but continued breathing deeply and the images steadied and remained. "Pertraca," she murmured quietly. The silver mist strengthened in her mind and she found herself in a different, strange, world. The jungle - the jungle whicch she had come through, forcing her men to die. She caught her breath. Her concentration wavered and she quickly steadied herself in the dream. What did she want to say to Gavin? And where was he? She realized her mistake - too much confusion. She felt her self sort of tumble out of the dream and land in midair, floating back to the ground of her room. She grunted, frustrated. IT had almost worked. But what did this dream mean? Was Gavin a traitor?

Elisa tried again, regaining her concentration after sorting out her confused thoughts. She began to picture herself, standing in an infinite space. Then she pictured Gavin, still deep in sleep. The silver line became to twist it's way through, connecting her mind with Gavin's. Elisa kept her concentration steady as all the images gathered in her head. "Pertraca," she murmurred softly. A soft light blinded her vision before the scenery cleared up again. She half expected to find herself again in the jungle but she was in a different scenery now. Elisa covered her mouth from the overwhelming stench. She was in Bellhaven. Gavin stood nearby, loitering at a street pub. She walked forward, trying to process everything while still keeping the dream fully functional. Elisa forced her way through the bustling crowds of people until she reached Gavin. She lightly tapped his shoulder. Gavin looked her way. "Elisa? Your here?" He said confused. "Yes, I think so, I think it worked," she said smiling victoriously. "Well that's wonderful but maybe I can sleep and enjoy my dream in peace now?" Elisa rolled her eyes. "Of course." She started to exit the dream, letting the exterior world drift back into her head. Soon she tumbled out of the dream and back into her room. Gavin still slept soundly on the floor. She suddenly remembered her previous dreamwalk, in the jungle. "I should've asked him about that while I could've," she murmurred. "Maybe I can ask him when he wakes."

A couple hours later, while Elisa was flipping through the magic pages, Gavin woke up and immediately drew his knife. "Did you see anything suspicious in my dream?" he shouted. Elisa raised an eyebrow. "The first time, if you must know, I saw the jungle that I traveled through to arrive in. Have you been there?" Gavin looked alarmed. "The place with the smoke?" "The Decegerus, yes," Elisa answered cautiously. "I've been attacked there," Gavin said. "By who?" Elisa's eyes widened. "You." Gavin narrowed his eyes and morphed into the black smoke, getting larger until it was a huge black cloud. It flew around her in a tornado. Gavin's face appeared in the smoke. Elisa screamed. He was holding his dagger, flying up to her and holding it against her throat. He morphed back into a human with glowing, red eyes and the dagger still against Elisa's neck. She held her breath and hissed, "I knew I shouldn't have trusted you, you backstabbing little..." He pressed harder, and Elisa gasped as blood spilled from her neck onto the knife. "Save it," he said.

Elisa glared up at Gavin, silently chastising herself over and over that she should've never trusted him. Everything made sense now. Gavin interrupted her thoughts still holding the knife to her neck. It pressed dangerously deep into her flesh. "I'm quite surprised that I was able to fool you into believing who I was. Gavin Haviliard. But you know that's not my real name." Elisa opened her mouth to reply. "Ah ah ah," Gavin said, cutting her off. "Don't you dare say a word." She closed her mouth shut with reluctance. "I bet with all of your researching and knowledge from your dear Lady Estella that you know that Decegerus are shapeshifters. Though it still surprises that even though towards the beginning of our... untimely relationship, you didn't trust me. You should've distrusted me. But instead you showed kindness, and trusted me almost immediately. Thanks to that I know all that I need to save and inform my brother's and sister's of your plans. And now I have no need for you anymore," he said grinning maliciously. Gavin–better said, the Decegerus– began to press the knife farther into her flesh. Elisa held her breath, racking her brain with ideas. Suddenly she thought of something. "Discedo," she said mentally. Discedo was a teleportation spell, a spell she'd read about while Gavin was still sleeping. But she hadn't practiced it. To conjure she just had to think of the place she wanted to go and say Discedo. She'd been thinking of Lady Kisawen's quarters, in order to speak with her. She suddenly appeared in Lady Kisawen's room, blood still dripping from her neck. Lady Kisawen was sitting at her desk writing. She looked up at her with some surprise. "Lady Elisa. What are you doing here?" "It's a very long story but one of the Invierno's Decegerus infiltrated the castle and tried to kill me. He's in my quarters right now."

Lady Kisawen's eyes widened. "Oh my." Lady Elisa nodded, fretful. "My weapons are in there. He's armed with a knife, and probably my weapons. And he's a Deceger-" Elisa was beginning to see stars from the amount of blood she was losing. She kneeled on the gorund of Lady Kisawen's room, her head spinning. Lady Kisawen hurried towards her, dropping her pen on the desk and run a finger through her long hair. She cleaned the wound - "Nitidi" - and healed it. "Prohiberus cruentis. Confervas." Elisa breathed deeply. "Thank you so much." Lady Kisawen nodded in reply. "We must gather the others." "No time! He's heading back to Invierno to inform them of our plan with the Light Magic!" Elisa said. "Use a spell, then," Lady Kisawen laughed. Elisa nodded. She used another spell she hadn't tried yet, but hoped it would work. "Episula Quorum Puerto Mar." She imagined her message : Come to Lady Kisawen's quarters. Emergency. Prepare for the battle. All members must be present. She concentrated hard and imagined the message going to all the recipients - Prince Thorin, Lord Zito, Lady Estella, Lord Geryson, and Lord Entinonyar. Five balls exploded from her hand and raced down the different hallways. Lady Kisawen and Lady Elisa waited in companionable silence, watching for the other five to come prepared for battle.

Soon the door burst open and everyone came tumbling in. Lord Zito looked especially panicked. "Decegerus... in... my.. quarters..." he panted. "Attacked... me" Elisa looked him over. He had a cut a long his cheek that bled heavily. She looked quickly to Lady Kisawen. She nodded. Elisa hurried over to him, remembering Lady Kisawen's cleansing and healing spell. "Nitidi," she murmurred. "Prohiberus curentis. Confervas." The wound closed up, not even leaving a scar. Lord Zito gave her a grateful, yet sheepish smile before leaning against the wall. "I've brought various weapons for our defense. I don't think you'll need one, will you, Lady Kisawen?" Lord Thorin said, putting down the various sheathed daggers and swords. "No, but I will take a dagger incase my magic does fail," she replied, fingering a very elegant blade. "Before we even get to that," Elisa managed. "Does anyone know how to dispatch of a Decegerus?" Everyone looked skeptically around the room. Lady Kisawen smiled. "It's quite simple, if you can breach their defenses. You simply must weaken it with a few strikes of a sword and then murmurr the banishment spell, Propello aeternum." "You must excuse me, but barely any of us except you can wield magic like that," Lady Estella said pointedly. Lady Kisawen chuckled. "Yes, but our Lady Elisa certainly can. She wields magic with power I have never seen before. I think she can take care of that part, couldn't you, Elisa?" Elisa nodded. It gave her some comfort knowing that since she was the one that got them into this mess, that she would banish the Decegerus. "I think we could all help weaken it enough so that Elisa can take the last step and banish it," said Lord Geryson. Everyone nodded in agreement. Suddenly there was pounding at the door, relentless pounding. The Decegerus had arrived. It was time for battle.

A huge iron sword with a barbed hooked cut straight through the door. Gavin appeared in the doorway, holding the sword. Elisa fired a golden arrow, beginning the battle. Gavin caught the arrow in his right hand. "Well, Lady Elisa. We can begin." The Inviernos came into the entrance hall in a single file line and created a huge formation of a mass army. Among the Animagus were many bears, wolves, walking sharks that were slightly questionnable, lions, tigers, and other carnivorous creatures. The Decegerus were mostly human, currently, but a few tangles of black smoke or patches of fire burned on the cold stone floor of the foyer. In sync, the seven of the Quorum shouted, "Codex!" A silver bubble envelopped each person. A few select ones were flickering, but they strengthened with the determination of the seven. The battle may be won or lost - but they would all fight to the death.

Elisa watched as her companions fought their opponents. Lord Thorin seemed the most in control, weaving and striking with experience. The other lords were just as skilled and held their ground in battle. Lord Geryson seemed surprisingly skilled in bowmanship and Elisa noticed that Lady Estella had excellent skills with double swords. Lady Kisawen twisted and turned through her opponents, light bursting from her pale hands. She had her dagger at the ready. Elisa on the other hand was struggling with her strong foes, murmurring various protection and offense spells, striking with her sword when she could. She made her way through the battle, slowly moving towards the Decegerus, who formed the back line of their army. Lord Thorin and Lady Kisawen followed her. "We'll both help you weaken them enough so you can conjure the banishment spell," Thorin yelled, over the clash of the battle. Elisa nodded as they faced the Decegerus. The rest of the lords held back, attacking any force that would stop them from completing the task. "Well, well, well," said the Decegerus that appeared as Gavin. "Looks like our little hero has come to save the day." The other Decegerus snickered. "You know you can't defeat us, Elisa. Not even your petty Kisawen has the magic to destroy us." Elisa looked to Lady Kisawen. She stood there glaring at her opponents, not even flinching as their magic flicked about her. "She may not have the magic to do it. But she has the knowledge," Elisa said forcefully. Gavin chuckled, his smoky features flitting with fear slightly. "Oh, really. Even if you do destroy us. There are seven of us still out there. This is only the beginning."

At that exact instant, the seven leagues of Inviernos arrived at the castle, led by the seven spies within each state - and Elisa was horrified to see that Amalur's spy was her friend Jonas. "Surprised?" Gavin shouted as she fired a new protection spell. "We had to attack him to make you not suspicious, and we regret it. He has great information about Amalur!" "And we thought we weren't doing so bad," Thorin muttered in Elisa's ear. "We can do it. We have to," Elisa answered. She channeled her energy into defeating the Inviernos around her. She kept in mind to keep Thorin and Kisawen safe and muttered to Thorin, "Watch out. Warn Kisawen too." Once they were safely and descreetly out of the way, fighting other animagus, Elisa shouted, "Detrimentum!" An orb of light came crashing down from the sky, landing on top of her. It dissolved all the Inviernos in her area, creating dozens of orbs of light where they used to be. They shot towards Elisa, who gathered the light in one hand and threw the powerful ball straight towards Gavin, just as he was shooting an arrow towards Geryson. The ball of light obsorbed the arrow and hit Gavin square in the chest, dissolving Gavin himself and exploding light everywhere. "Wow," Entinonyar said. "That wasn't even the banishment spell," Elisa answered in surprise. "It was just to get rid of some of the Inviernos near me." "You have powerful magic, Elisa," Kisawen said. "The first time you did it with the right intentions, and it did incredible things. Unfortunately, the banishment will be more difficult, and the 'defeat' spell won't work every time. It requires controlled hatred, which you had against Gavin, who is now defeated. You don't have that against the rest of these Inviernos. Keep working!" They split off, forming a triangle and fighting in the three different directions. Elisa killed the first few with her sword before casting another protection spell. An enormous lions began advancing on her. She almost shivered in fright, but breathed deeply, controlling her fear. She concentrated her power in her dominant hand. "Recedimus!" she cried. The spell hit the lion full on, but it wasn't enough to kill it. Then she had an idea. Elisa strengthened her protection spell to give her time. She gathered her concentration and channeled her loyalty this time. "Hypnotica," she murmured. A silver cord drifted to the lion's head. "Fight for the Quorum. Defeat the Inviernos," she whispered intentionally. The lion turned silver with magic and leapt off, fighting three Decegerus at once. Satisfied, Elisa continued fighting through the thick cloud of warriors.
